The four-year project will establish a national proving-ground framework for advanced mining technologies, autonomous operations, connected systems, and AI-driven innovation.
LYNCHBURG, Va., September. 9, 2026 — Innovative Wireless Technologies, Inc. (IWT) has been selected for negotiation of an award by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to lead a Mine of the Future: Proving Ground Initiative project. Mine of the Future is a national effort designed to accelerate the development, testing and deployment of advanced technologies for the U.S. mining industry.
IWT’s project, “Building the Mine of the Future: A Real-World Proving Ground for Autonomous Operations, Connected Systems & AI-Driven Mining Innovation,” was selected for negotiation under DOE funding opportunity DE-FOA-0003390 through the Advanced Mining and Mineral Production Technologies Office, part of DOE’s Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation.
The four-year initiative is anticipated to represent a total project value of nearly $25 million, with approximately $17.7 million expected to come from federal funding and the balance from matching contributions by IWT and its project partners, pending award negotiations. Led by IWT in partnership with Colorado School of Mines, Virginia Tech, the West Virginia Training and Conference Center, the University of Kentucky, Device Solutions, Phillips Global, and other partners, the project will establish a national Mine of the Future proving-ground framework that integrates underground and surface mining environments.
The proving ground will provide a real-world setting where mining operators, equipment manufacturers, researchers and technology developers can develop, demonstrate and validate next-generation technologies before broader deployment.
The initiative will support applied research and demonstration across several critical technology areas, including secure wireless connectivity, workforce communications and tracking, advanced equipment monitoring, semi-autonomous and autonomous vehicle technologies and data-driven operational intelligence.
By combining multi-layer communications infrastructure with modern sensing, analytics and control systems, the proving ground will support improved situational awareness, reduced risk to miners and more efficient extraction of critical minerals essential to U.S. energy, manufacturing and supply-chain priorities.
“This selection represents a significant milestone for IWT and our partners. For more than two decades, we have served the mining industry with technologies designed to make operations safer, more connected and more informed,” said Eric Hansen, CEO of IWT. “The Mine of the Future closely aligns with IWT’s technology roadmap and our vision for an increasingly intelligent, data-driven mining environment. This project provides an opportunity to accelerate that vision while working alongside government, industry and research leaders to advance technologies that strengthen operational awareness, improve safety and support the competitiveness of U.S. mining. We are proud to have been selected and excited to help shape the next generation of mining technology.”
Workforce development will also be a central component of the initiative. The project will include hands-on training, certification programs, and collaborative research activities designed to help prepare workers for increasingly connected, automated, and data-driven mining operations.
The resulting national-scale proving-ground capability will provide mining operators, equipment manufacturers, researchers and technology developers with a repeatable, secure environment to validate emerging technologies, accelerate innovation and strengthen domestic critical mineral production and long-term U.S. competitiveness.
